Your Allergies & Your Allergy Treatment

Allergies are a very common problem that is caused by an abnormal reaction by a harmless substance known as allergen. The word allergen means a substance capable of producing allergies. These are hypersensitive responses from the immune system to substances that either enter or come into contact with your body. For allergy treatment most people depend on synthetic medicines but to start off with the treatment it is required that you know about the problem in detail.

Mainly there are two main types of allergic reactions

  1. Immediate hypersensitivity - This is caused by an antibody called immunoglobullin E (IGE), and is fast in occurring (within less than 30-60 min). This is related to disorders like as rhinitis or allergy to food. In this case, skin tests are done to diagnose the allergy
  2.
  3. Delayed hypersensitivity -  This is caused by some cells (T cells), and occurs after several hours (usually 24-48 hours). In this case, skin tests are done to diagnose the allergy. The test is usually performed by patch testing (epicutaneous test), and reading is being performed after 2 to 4 days.

The allergic reactions take place in 2 phases:

  1. Sensitization phase – Where the immune system begins to react against the allergen. Antibodies against the allergen are produced. This being the initial stage, the patient does not develop any symptoms.
  2. Symptomatic phase – Where due to subsequent contacts of the patient with the allergen, the allergen binds to the IGE which is on the surface of mast cells.

  • Talking of immediate hypersensitivity, it is related to disorders such as rhinitis or food allergy. Allergen are harmless substance that causes allergic reaction. Allergic rhinitis also called hay fever, is an allergic response to specific allergens. There are some very common symptoms of Allergic rhinitis whcih includes stuffy nose, watery eyes, sneezing and a sore or scratchy throat.

Some of the main cause of allergic rhinitis are inhalation of dust and smoke, bad digestion, staying awake till late night, exposure to cold and chilly weather, increased sexual activity, not being in balance with the season, and the suppression of natural urges.
